Montessori + Me

Our attitude toward the newborn should not be one of compassion but rather of reverence before the mystery of creation, that a spiritual being has been confined with limits perceptible to us.
— Maria Montessori

MSM is proud to present our community program, Montessori + Me! This course introduces expecting parents to the Montessori method and guides them in the process of implementing it at home in the life of their newborn.

Course Description

Parents begin Montessori + Me by completing a six-week instructional course while they are still pregnant. Classes are held at the Montessori School of Marion on Monday evenings from 5:45 to 7:00 PM. Each 6-week session costs a total of $175. We ask that expecting mothers come with their husband in order to build a unified team in the home that best supports your baby.

Through a series of six classes, parents will learn in a nurturing setting under the guidance of a trained Montessori instructor. They will be taught how to support their child’s natural development in order to raise children in a respectful manner that encourages growth and independence.

The course will cover:

  • Setting up your baby’s home environment

    • Safety, Montessori materials, mobiles, floor beds, and more

  • The child in the womb, delivery, and the 4th trimester (symbiotic period)

    • Sensorial impressions in the womb, language development, birth, skin to skin contact, and the child’s first few weeks post-birth.

  • The child’s desire for independence

    • The importance of observation, joy in struggle and accomplishment, free movement, diapering and toileting.

  • Rhythms and routines of care

    • Feeding and breastfeeding, language development, nurturing emotional bonds, sleeping, bathing.

At birth, the child leaves a person – his mother’s womb – and this makes him independent of her bodily functions. The baby is next endowed with an urge, or need, to face the outer world and to absorb it. We might say that he is born with ‘the psychology of world conquest.’
